YOU can help me start crafting again

Posted by The Floozie On April - 14 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

I know I’ve been MIA lately, and this is why.
I’m walking the SGK 3 Day in November. This is my 2nd year. My goal is to raise $5k for breast cancer research and since fundraising is so darn time consuming, my crafting has come to a screeching halt.

That’s right, it’s not that I’m not posting. I’ve literally done nothing since my last post. My sewing machine cries itself to sleep every night. It’s pitiful really.

But YOU can help me reach my $5,000 goal, which will give me back my free-time for crafting!

Today I’m hosting a ONE DAY ONLY blogging event. I’ve got around 60 blogs around the globe helping with it, and I’d love for you to join in too. If you want to find out how, click here

I’m basically trying to round up 3-4 $10 donations from each of these bloggers and their readers in order to hit $2k in donations in one day. It’s a HUGE undertaking, and I’m not sure how close I’ll get. But if I can get in $2k today, I’ll have hit my big goal and I’ll have way more time for sewing, reconing, etc. Wouldn’t that be lovely?
So you can click here to donate a little and help towards a wonderful cause, while also getting me closer to having free time to craft/post/share/etc.

Today is the last day!!

In the meantime, here is a sneak peek of my latest recon ;)

craftevolve

A few weeks ago I commented on a post on a cool website called CraftEvolve. CE encourages green crafting through up-cycling, re-purposing and usage of local organic and sustainable crafting resources.  I submitted a project of mine to them through their contributor link, since it seemed right up my alley, and the response was “Hey, can we interview you?” to which I, obviously, answered “OF COURSE!” (with exactly that much enthusiasm, too. I promise.)

The one amusing part of it all was that they wanted a photo of my crafting space. If you’re on my facebook fan page , you’ve already heard this comparison… but it was a little like being asked for a photo of my panty drawer. LOL. You know, tiny, crowded, and way messier than I want people to know it is.  We were actually in the process of seriously unpacking our bedroom from the move (that’s always the last room to be finished, isn’t it?) so I took the photo once everything was gone/out of the way. Not as embarrassing as I’d thought it might be, but at the same time, kind of inspiring. Because my craft space is SO very small. No joke… it’s one of these and a 2nd little matching tower stand that they evidently no loner carry. It’s tiny. It’s cramped. It’s cluttered. But it’s the most I’ve got right now. So let that be a lesson to all you crafters: You don’t need some big, beautifully decorated, dedicated crafting space in order to get stuff done!

Check out the link to my interview below and please take a moment to leave her some comment luvin’s to help me thank her for featuring my site! Thank you so much!

(though out this post will be photos of past reconstructions. click on a photo to learn more about the project)

Since we all know that one of my favorite things is reconstructing clothing, I’ve decided to commit to hosting a semi-annual Recon-a-thon. That means in January and July(or August), each year, I’ll host a Recon-A-Thon open to ANYONE that wants to participate.

I’m pleased to announce that the first Recon-A-Thon is just right around the corner and with Spoonflower as the fabulous sponsor for this contest, you can not possibly go wrong!

If you’ve never been to Spoonflower… well, first, Shame on you. Second, go there right now. They are a fabulous up-and-coming website where you can not only order some of the coolest fabrics on the net, you can also… brace yourself… upload your own designs and have them printed to high-quality fabrics for… brace yourself again… LOW prices, with NO minimums! No, I’m not kidding. Yes, I swear on my childhood-pet-goldfish’s grave. The prize for the RaT10 will be a fabulous addition to your fabric stash, from Spoonflower.

So go on, lovely readers. Go dig in your closets and grab out anything you can find that you’ve been wanting to try to recon. I’ll post all the nitty gritty details later, but for the time being, know that you can use up to 2 items from your home/thrift store/corner dumpster (i’m only kidding… sort of), so dig around and set it aside. The rest of the details are coming soon!

If you plan to participate, please grab the button from the right column, and comment on this post with a link to your blog :)

Gleðileg jól!

Gleðileg jól is how you pronounce “Merry Christmas” in Icelandic. To pronounce it, try sounding this out “Glethe lay yole”

How do I know how to say Merry Christmas in Icelandic, you ask? Oh, that’s simple. I grew up there. For 4.5 years of my childhood (from 2nd grade through 6th grade) I lived in a town called Keflavik, Iceland.

Iceland is a beautiful country with amazing skylines, which show off the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)

yes, it really does look that beautiful

In Iceland, children are visited by Santa just as they are in the US, but they are also visited the 12 days prior, by the Icelandic Yule Lads (or the jólasveinarnir  in Icelandic).

As from Wikipedia

The Yule Lads originate from Icelandic folklore. Early on their number and depictions varied greatly depending on location, with each individual Lad ranging from mere pranksters to homicidal monsters who eat children.

In 1932 the poem “Jólasveinarnir” was published as a part of the popular poetry book “Jólin Koma” (”Christmas Arrives”) by Icelandic poet Jóhannes úr Kötlum. The poem reintroduced Icelandic society to Icelandic Yuletide folklore and established what is now considered the ‘official’ thirteen Yule Lads, their personalities and connection to other folkloric characters.

In our house, we celebrate the Icelandic Yule Lads every year, placing a shoe on the windowsill and waking to find a trinket from the “Trolls”. (We, however, celebrate the kind, prankster trolls, since our children are so young)

If you are interested in beginning this tradition in your house, visit the following links for more information. They start coming tomorrow night!

Maybe if you’re good, I’ll teach yo how to sing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in Icelandic too. ;)

What a morning we’ve had. First off, it started at 3:30 this morning with our CO detector going off. We thought it was faulty, so we reset it, and it started again. So we tested with a 2nd detector (a plug in one) and that went off too. So we packed up the kids, opened all the windows (and it was raining and 33 degrees outside!) and headed out to sonic for breakfast. Or so we thought. Sonic was closed, so we went to CVS and got mini donuts and milk and sat in the car having breakfast together.
Headed back to the house in the yucky cold rain, only to find out (now FREEZING) house was still triggering the plug-in CO detector. So we called the fire department, and they came out and tested. Brendan was excited to see the truck, but Daddy and I were no where near as thrilled. They tested and it came back that there was no CO, but they told us when they walked in that they probably wouldn’t find anything with all the windows being open.
It was decided that it was caused by the damper being closed too soon after a fire, and the gases backing up in the fireplace and spilling into the house.
So around 5:45, Brendan and Mommy went back to bed. Lily was still wide awake so she played on the floor in the bathroom while Daddy got ready for work. Dad called me on his way to work and said that it was snowing outside, but I was dozing while the kids played, so I just said “okay” and laid back down. Around 7:30 we decided it was time to get up, pack in the toys, and get ready for school. We were all already dressed from our early morning breakfast run, but we needed to get shoes, coats, etc.
I thought quickly “Oh, I bet the snow is already gone” and glanced out the window to see this
